The truck DPF is a diesel engine component of the exhaust system designed to reduce emissions of particulate matter, which are a mixture of very fine particles and liquid droplets.
The main purpose of the DPF
That is to capture particles inside the filter porous walls when exhaust gasses pass through it. Over time, the trapped particles accumulate and form a layer of “soot” in the truck DPF, after which the DPF must be removed, or washed on special high-pressure cleaning facility for DPF.
Why are there problems with the truck DPF?
If the truck DPF is not cleaned regularly, it may become clogged. When this happens, it can lead not only to the maintenance of the DPF itself, but also to the maintenance of the engine and hence cause unforeseen maintenance expenses and downtime, and lead to the profit decrease of the commercial vehicle fleet and overhead costs increase.
However, if soot is accumulating in the DPF, it will eventually clog the filter and lead to reduced engine performance and increased fuel consumption. To prevent this, the DPF must undergo a regular process called regeneration.
Regeneration
The DPF regeneration in trucks, CE and buses is controlled by a pressure sensor which monitors the exhaust gasses pressure difference before and after the filter. This difference indicates the level of soot accumulated in the DPF and the engine management system reacts to this information.
When the DPF is clean, the pressure difference is negligible, but as it becomes clogged, the difference becomes more apparent. If the pressure difference exceeds the set limits, the engine control system initiates the regeneration of the DPF filter.
The regeneration of the truck DPF can be active, passive or forced.
During the active regeneration of the truck DPF, a small amount of diesel fuel is injected into the exhaust stream to increase the temperature in the DPF and promote the oxidation of soot.
Passive regeneration occurs during normal operation of the vehicle when the driving conditions on the road create enough heat for self-cleaning of the DPF.
The forced regeneration of the truck DPF is initiated at the driver's command through the dashboard switch and is used in cases when standard driving conditions do not provide enough heat for the DPF regeneration or when the system gives a warning of the truck DPF clogging.
Regular regeneration is necessary to maintain the DPF efficient operation and compliance with environmental standards. However, drivers may face financial difficulties due to the frequent necessity to refuel the truck. Considering this, one of the options may be to remove environmental systems, such as a diesel particulate filter, and it can reduce maintenance costs. However, before making this decision, it is important to consider the legislation and the possible consequences of removing the DPF filter physically.

Advantages of deleting the truck DPF system
- Reduction of fuel consumption;
- Power increase: The deleted truck DPF will not limit air consumption and reduce engine performance. When removed, the capacity of the exhaust system increases, which can increase engine power. A more powerful engine can operate and use fuel more efficiently;
- Improved combustion efficiency: Soot in the filter affects the fuel combustion process in the engine and reduces engine efficiency. Deleting the truck DPF will increase fuel combustion and, therefore, engine efficiency, resulting in reduced fuel consumption;
- Increased engine life: The DPF creates resistance to the exhaust gas flow due to its structure and filling with soot. The resistance decreases as the DPF is deleted from the truck, which can improve the gasses passability and reduce the engine load, which, in turn, will reduce fuel consumption;
- Absence of errors and emergency modes caused by poorly functioning truck DPF;
- Regeneration of the truck DPF is not required (the DPF cleaning indication will not light up on the dashboard);
- No black or bluish smoke occur when driving in heavy traffic, as regeneration will never turn on again;
- By disabling and deleting the truck DPF, there is no need in the regeneration completion, when you urgently need to turn off the car and leave (it is well known that the DPF running regeneration must not be interrupted);
- The cost of frequent oil change will be reduced when the truck DPF falls into disrepair (owners of cars with oil pollution sensors understand what we are talking about);

The exhaust gas aftertreatment system consists of two parts, which are designed to increase the exhaust gas temperature for proper regeneration of the truck DPF. The aftertreatment fuel nozzle (AFI), mounted on the turbocharger outlet, injects diesel fuel into the exhaust stream during the regeneration cycle of the DPF Filter. When the fuel comes into contact with diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a chemical reaction occurs, and the temperature of the exhaust system rises to a level sufficient to oxidize soot in the DPF filter and reduce emissions from the exhaust pipe.
A car dealer can sell a truck with a deleted particulate filter (DPF), but this may be illegal in some jurisdictions, as it may contradict laws and regulations on environmental protection and vehicle emissions.
