How does the NOx sensor work?
The NOx sensor consists of a Nernst element through which current flows. It adjusts the air/fuel ratio to λ=1. The second element, usually made of ceramics with a layer of rhodium, breaks down nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen. The NOx controller, usually located close to the NOx sensor, calculates the level of nitrogen oxides present in the exhaust gases and sends this data to the SCR controller. The SCR controller then regulates the amount of diesel exhaust fluid injected into the SCR catalyst, which in turn converts excess nitrogen oxides into water and nitrogen.
