The NOx sensor not only monitors the level of nitrogen oxides released into the air, but also plays an important role in its control using the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system in diesel vehicles.
The NOx sensor is a key part of this system, which also includes the SCR catalyst, diesel particulate filter (DPF) and turbocharger. If the truck NOx sensor detects the release of too many NOx gases, it sends this information to the SCR system, which then adjusts the output signal to a level relevant with emission standards, which helps in accurately calibrating the urea injection volume to effectively reduce NOX emissions. How does the NOx sensor work?
The NOx sensor consists of a Nernst element through which current flows. It adjusts the air/fuel ratio to λ=1. The second element, usually made of ceramics with a layer of rhodium, breaks down nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and oxygen. The NOx controller, usually located close to the NOx sensor, calculates the level of nitrogen oxides present in the exhaust gases and sends this data to the SCR controller. The SCR controller then regulates the amount of diesel exhaust fluid injected into the SCR catalyst, which in turn converts excess nitrogen oxides into water and nitrogen.

The exhaust gas aftertreatment system consists of two parts, which are designed to increase the exhaust gas temperature for proper regeneration of the truck DPF. The aftertreatment fuel nozzle (AFI), mounted on the turbocharger outlet, injects diesel fuel into the exhaust stream during the regeneration cycle of the DPF Filter. When the fuel comes into contact with diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a chemical reaction occurs, and the temperature of the exhaust system rises to a level sufficient to oxidize soot in the DPF filter and reduce emissions from the exhaust pipe.
